Betty Norwood Chaney came to the attention of IBW in February 1974 when she wrote a story analyzing the work of the Institute for The Atlanta Voice Newspaper where she had worked. Later, when IBW needed an editor for The Monthly Report and Occasional Papers, she was invited to apply. She continued working as an editor for various organizations in Atlanta for the next 15 years. Then in 1989, she became a writing specialist at Clark Atlanta University and later a program manager before retiring in December 2009. After retiring, she returned to her first love, writing, and had three plays produced. The plays developed into a trilogy, and the first one, The Rooting Place, was published in book form in 2020.
